History of Wedding Favors (Favours)

Every culture around the world approaches marriage as a celebration the whole community is involved in celebrating. Wedding favors are gifts given to guests as a thank you to friends and family for participating in your special day. The tradition of providing gifts to guests dates back centuries to when bridal couples, in 16th century England, gave out gifts of lace and ribbon called love knots.

Since the bride and groom are often associated with good luck, a common belief was that everything that touched them would also be blessed with good luck. Giving gifts to those that participate in the wedding was a way of passing those blessing along to everyone.

One of the most traditional wedding favors used world wide is a small bag containing five pieces of confectionery. This wedding favor is used to signify each of the five wishes usually bestowed unto the bride and groom by their guests, health, wealth, happiness, fertility, and longevity.

Whether you chose candles or candy, specialized trinkets or wedding cameras, the key to good wedding favors is to show your guests that you put time and effort into choosing or making favors. You want each guest to feel appreciated and special with your choice of a favor.
